We will add new information for Hogmanay as it becomes available but most events are fairly similar each year. It is still unclear what events might be possible during the Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, but there will likely be no large gatherings due to the coronavirus social distancing measures. The street party, concerts, and torchlight procession are unlikely to take place. In this section, we cover all the things you should know before you go from what exactly is Hogmanay to what to wear to how to find family friendly events. Although Hogmanay is generally regarded as the most important Scottish holiday, the origins of both the word and the traditions are obscure. Many people think that the term comes from French but there are also theories that it may have Gaelic, Norse, or Anglo-Saxon origins. The traditions, as with most modern holidays, likely grew from pagan ones and many were probably also adapted from Christmas. So it is likely that the modern Hogmanay traditions have some origins back in the 17th century while others are much more recent.

It was like a Scottish episode of Dating in the Dark but without the big reveal – can you beat it? The dating game is a fickle one, especially in an era where no one approaches anyone except by swiping right on your phone. This was unsurprisingly how my worst first date came about; a quick flick through some pictures and you’re signed up to dinner and a night spent wondering what you did to deserve this. It all began on a hot summer’s day – the setting that underpins most romantic plots – when I was graciously invited for a drink at The Tron bar and on a subterranean tour of Edinburgh Vaults.
Call me crazy but I had high hopes. When I arrived nervous, awkward and a tad late he barely said hi as he carried on watching the football and sipped on his pint of Tennents. I would go into more detail about this part of the date but to be honest there isn’t much to say because not much was said. Moving to the lower echelons of the city, the rating of my date descended further. Not only did the tour guide ask if my date was my brother we must have looked that incompatible he disliked him as much as I did.
Every story the Mercat tour guide told, this guy would denounce them as lies – like ”nah, I don’t believe that”, ”but how did that happen mate? I can safely say I envied the dead at this point. The eerie quiet of the vaults made the evening drag as I travelled down the dark, damp and funny smelling passage ways wondering if I could somehow get away with attaching myself to the young German family on the tour or just make a break for it.

When we sadly closed our doors back in March, we made sure, in the great tradition of the theatre, to leave a light on the stage. The ghost light will be switched off, and our beer palace chandeliers turned on. The ovens will be fired up, the tanks brimmed with fresh chilled beer, the coffee machines heated and the staff raring to go. Set to be an exciting mix of great food, fantastic beer and some incredible music on our Beer Palace stage.
This means that some things will inevitably be different. Bookings for food and drinks in all areas of the venue are now available. Let the adventure continue because the show must go on! The Georgian House is an 18th-century townhouse situated at No. It has been restored and furnished by the National Trust for Scotland , and is operated as a popular tourist attraction, with over 40, visitors annually. In a young unknown architect named James Craig won the competition to design a layout for Edinburgh’s first New Town. By this time in the midth century Edinburgh had become extremely overcrowded and the rich and poor alike were living in very close quarters in cramped conditions in the tenements of the medieval Old Town.
The New Town was to be constructed to the north of the Old Town, and the intention was that it would remain a strictly residential development, a privileged enclave for the wealthy away from the squalor found in the Old Town. Today visitors can experience what life was like in the Old Town by visiting Gladstone’s Land on the Royal Mile, which is a restored tenement building set up as the dwelling of a 17th-century merchant.
Craig’s design for the New Town formed a grid-like pattern consisting three principal streets and two large squares with gardens for the residents use.
