What would be the worst case scenario for matchmaking in League of Legends? Unranked players matched against a player in the top five percent of all players, maybe? On one team: four unranked players including a level one account and a player who was Silver in Season 4. I could explain that our Account Level 1 jungler played Shaco, couldn’t even take Flash and had a hard time clearing jungle camps.
I could speak at length about how a game this imbalanced would be an obvious deterrent to new players such as myself. But I don’t feel like any of that is needed, because the results speak for themselves: there was no way for my team to win this game, and there was no meaningful opportunity for me to learn from the loss in any way. It’s a foregone conclusion, a waste of 30 minutes that can’t have been satisfying for the other team and was indescribably worthless for mine.
Did our Level 1 Shaco, playing without runes or masteries, learn anything about playing jungle more effectively from this loss? It was just the price of entry that my team paid to the cold logic of the League of Legends matchmaking system.
League of legends matchmaking is bad
Be friendly. Civil discussion is encouraged. Toxic attitudes or flaming aren’t welcome here. Try to remain respectful.
I know ranked games are based on MMR but how are unranked games decided? LOL. I’ve done this multiple times with great success (when the stars align).
They created fresh accounts, started playing with unblemished MMR and in some cases, tanked the MMR to make sure they started as low as possible and climbed through the ladder back to their original rank. These series also showed their viewers what strategies the streamer would use to win and climb the ladder efficiently, allow a better player to point out and capitalize on the mistakes lower-ranked players miss, and allow the streamer to play in a bit more relaxed of an environment.
This type of content has become less of a challenge to those high elo streamers and more as a way for them to get easy content by beating up on lower elo players and to be more entertaining without having to tryhard. Unfortunately, as these series became more commonplace, they began to undermine the original point they were attempting to dispute. Over the course of an Unranked to Challenger series, the arc of the streamer will generally go something like this.
At this point, the streamer has to try harder and normally has less success, but also begins complaining more about the quality of their teammates or matchmaking for opponents. Even though these players may be significantly higher than the elo they are playing in, they begin to talk, act, and play like they are in Elo Hell. Most of them do continue to climb, yes, but it becomes far more difficult than it was in Bronze, when they could 1v9 and win 20 straight games.
Thus, the experiment ultimately proves to viewers that, yes, there is an Elo Hell where streamers start to feel exactly the same way that you do when you fail your Silver II promos for the third time because your top laner disconnected.

Valorant is currently in closed beta, but most players are already looking forward to entering the ranked matchmaking queue. Some people mistake ranked systems as nothing more than bragging right. Simply playing match after match of Valorant seems like a pointless thing. With a ranked system, you will have something that you can actually track as you put in more time to the game. Seeing your rank go up or down can be considered a type of progression, giving you a sense of reward.
Yes, games are meant to be played for fun, but many competitive gamers find fun in winning. In ranked mode, you get fewer players that are just goofing off. In non-ranked queue, players will often encounter enemies that are significantly better than them. This could result in one-sided stomps that are anything but fun for the losing team. With ranked queue, rank tier limitations will keep matches mostly even, barring the occasional smurf account.
However, if you want to take your game to the next level, playing in ranked queue is the way to go. Everybody starts out as unranked players until they have finished a series of placement matches.
League of Legends: Why Unranked to Challenger Series Teach the Wrong Lessons
Matchmaking is the existing automated process in League of Legends that matches a player to and against other players in games. The system estimates how good a player is based on whom the player beats and to whom the player loses. It knows pre-made teams are an advantage, so it gives pre-made teams tougher opponents than if each player had queued alone or other premades of a similar total skill level Riot Games Inc.
The basic concept is that the system over time understands how strong of a player you are, and attempts to place you in games with people of the same strength.
Specifically, specially in unranked matchmaking 3v3 lol ranked players have their own league of legends and no longer be as it means occasionally high-mmr.
In the past, we have released a post touching on how the MMR system works. We are updating it to properly reflect the current system in Rainbow Six Siege. Your skill represents your ability to win a game. Comparing two teams’ skill gives you the probability that one team will win against the other. The higher the difference, the more likely a given team is going to win. When two teams with the same skill levels are matched up with each other, they both have an equal shot at winning. The estimation of your skill is probabilistic.
